At The Melanin N Me Learning Center, we are dedicated to improving the education of our history taught to youth so that they possess a firm understanding of what we are and from whom we descend.

We believe that by educating with a committed goal of empowering true cultural understanding, our children will go forth possessing a true knowledge of self, which will inspire pride in our culture and foster a commitment to community building.

What Sets Us Apart?

We teach African history before American history begins. We teach our story to the youth so that they have a knowing of who they are and that our story is much more than what began on slave ships.

We begin learning ancient Africans starting on the continent of Africa, but our journey of exploration will undeniably lead us to every continent where our ancestors have left clear imprints and footprints of their ancient knowledge, cultural significance and understanding of the universe.

We understand that knowledge is power. Education in black history from a global perspective focusing on the very beginnings of civilizations, global migration of ancient Africans, and the impact of our ancestors on the current state of countless other cultures, will help reinforce and cement our true legacy and excellence that exists in our DNA – that melanin in us.

Our goal is to empower through teaching, inspire through hands on learning, and bring about confidence by igniting their imaginations based on a history of themselves.

At Melanin N Me, we expect that each youth participating in our program will build an understanding of who we are and hold themselves and the community accountable in striving for excellence in everything we do, awareness of who we are and confidence in who we can become.

Melanin N Me promotes community within our learning center for our students. We foster an environment where young learners come to understand to appreciate one another and understand how effective we are when working together.

Melanin N Me Learning Center prepares each child for leadership. Each learner is given the tools and resources to begin to develop characteristics of a genuine leader such as initiative, self-confidence, integrity and accountability.

Our Heritage

The Story of the Myth of the Frog

The symbol of the frog represents rebirth and luck.

Its meaning is recognized across many cultures and carries with it the promise of new life, new beginnings and new adventures.

Alongside its representation in culture, there is also a myth of the frog, that gives rise to a different tale that cautions us about the dangers of being unaware of the gradual changes in an environment that can come to harm us later if adjustments aren’t embraced.

The story of the myth of the frog tells us that if you put a frog into a bowl of boiling water, it will leap out. But if you place a frog into a bowl and gradually heat the water over time, the frog, ever so pliant, will remain in the bowl constantly working to adjust its body temperature until it inevitably succumbs to the boiling heat of the water.

About The Frog

The significance behind the myth of the frog is a tale of caution that suggests people be aware of becoming complacent within the comfort of your environment, all the while not recognizing the slight changes that are happening that can lead to disaster if you do not act. In this scenario, the miseducation of our youth is the constant warming of the water.

The unknowing frog will remain in the boiling water all the while constantly adjusting to the ever-increasing temperature until it succumbs to the heat even though it possessed the ability to escape the water the entire time. A simple tap on the bowl would have signified to the frog to jump to freedom and escape.

At Melanin N Me Learning, cultural understanding and self-identity through education is our way of tapping the bowl to encourage our youth to understand who they are and therefore what they are capable of.

We don’t perceive the danger of being uninformed about our own cultural identity, because we think we must continue to adjust to the circumstances of our environment in order to survive.

The danger lurks in the future of a generation that lacks a knowledge of self, cultural pride and a reverence for ancestral sacrifice due to miseducation by omission.
